Should Business Bloggers Be controversial?

One of the hardest decisions to make, and a question asked to our business website designers on a regular basis is what should they blog about. First thing is first, your business website should be relevant to your business sector, so make sure you are writing about things where you can include keyphrases that you want Google to see. But what you write about is key.

It is well known in blogging circles, and to a point business circles that if you want people to come back, if you want people to do the work on your behalf linking your articles from their website – or message forums, it helps to upset a few people. Sounds crazy? Well it is a tight rope you are walking, and as long as you stay away from politics, race and religion, the chances are that upsetting a few people on the internet to get your point across is not altogether a bad thing.

Being controversial will get your blog shared.

Look at it this way. You have spent lots of time writing articles, but it appears nobody is reading them and the only comments you get are spam. Why is this? The answer is often demonstrated on Facebook. Have you noticed the only time you get a rush of people commenting on your Facebook status is when people either strongly agree or strongly disagree? Well the same applies to blogging. The slight difference with blogging is that people will then visit other forums or blogs, or do their own articles about what you wrote on their own blog, because they disagreed or agreed so strongly with what you said.

Is all publicity good publicity?

What are the benefits of this chain reaction, which will mean if you have upset the right people there could be a chain reaction of where you business blog article is seen? Well it is simple, by having links on other websites, it will help with your Google Page Rank. And best of all you are not having to lift a finger to do it. Not only that, your website is getting seen by more people because it people are posting your article on other websites or are quoting from it with a link to the article you wrote. Get this right and it could spiral.

It applies the principle of all news is good news, or all publicity is good publicity. So you might upset some people who think they will not use you, but would they ever have used you anyway. You have increased your chances of getting more business just by doing something that got your business website found in the first place.

So be creative when you write your business blog, bait a few people into commenting and keep a track on Google of where links to your articles have been posted. When the domino effect begins, who knows where it will end.
